- The earth caught up with Mars this past summer in an encounter that culminated on August 27th, 2006. On this date, Mars was only 34,649,589 miles from earth. This is the closest the two planets have been in recorded history. Astronomers estimate that this has not occurred in the last 5,000 years and that it may not occur in the next 60,000 years. Hope you watched Mars grow larger in the sky from the beginning of August. It was nearly as bright as the moon and visible with the naked eye.
